26 World Health Organisation (WHO) 118. The WHO has laid down guidelines on air quality1 to provide states with some guidance and reduce the impact on health of air pollution. The guidelines published in 1987 and updated in 1997 related to Europe. Those published in 2006 cover the entire world and are based on an assessment of current scientific data by experts. The limits on the concentration of air pollutants apply mainly to particulate matter, ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2). A summary of these guidelines was published in 2006 and the complete text will be published in 2007.
