Mission to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland*
Summary
The Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an
adequate standard of living undertook an official visit to the United Kingdom of Great
Britain and Northern Ireland from 29 August to 11 September 2013. The purpose of the
visit was to examine the realization of the right to adequate housing in the United Kingdom
in light of international human rights standards.
The Special Rapporteur explores the combination of housing, land and planning
policies with housing benefits in the welfare system that have been central to the provision
of adequate housing. She raises concerns about the erosion in recent years of these policies
and its impact on specific population groups. The Special Rapporteur concludes with some
recommendations.
